A state-of-art quality assessment Laboratory has been established at National Rice Research Institute, Cuttack with the funding support received from Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, Odisha. The facility has been developed under the project, “Strengthening Entrepreneurs in Marketing and Export of Value Added Agricultural Products by Establishing a State-of-Art Quality Assessment Laboratory in Odisha”. The laboratory will provide quality analysis support to the producers as well as different stake holders in value chain of rice, which is a major agricultural produce in the state. This will help to bridge gap between the producers, traders and market demands.
The laboratory will able to analyze carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, fats, fibre, antioxidants, minerals and heavy metals in rice samples. Besides, the lab can also analyze quality parameters like aroma and sensory properties of rice which may help to fetch higher prices of the produce in the market. The state-of-art quality assessment Laboratory is well equipped with high-end sophisticated equipments like GCMS-MS, HPLC, Rheo- visco analyzer, Falling No. machine, Texture analyzer, colorimeter and many others. Seed scanner can evaluate all the physical parameters of the grain sample to meet the requirements of mandis including the parameters required for marketing through e- NAM mandis.
The laboratory is able to evaluate more than 1000 samples per year catering the needs of all its stakeholders. This will certainly strengthen the farmers, FPOs and agricultural entrepreneurs to demand better prices for their quality produce, reinforcing the agricultural sector in the state.
A “Rice Milling and Processing Unit” is to be established under the same project. The unit will have equipments for rice processing and value addition like pasta-making, popping, flaking, noodle making, parboiling, milling and packaging of rice and rice based products. The unit will be able to incubate more than 100 incubatee entrepreneurs per year in processing and value addition.
